From the Washington Post:
"Former Virginia governor Mark R. Warner will announce in an e-mail to supporters Thursday morning that he plans to run next year for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican John W. Warner.
Sources close to the former governor said Warner has told them he will announce his intention to run for the Senate in 2008, which would set the stage for one of the most competitive races in the country next year."
Chris Matthews, in questioning Gov. Vilsack and his wife Christie on their endorsement of Hillary today, repeatedly asserted that Hillary supported the establishment of "permanent" U.S. bases in Iraq.
I understand that Hillary sees the U.S. having a vital national security (i.e. anti-terrorist) interest in the region over the next few years that would entail a limited number of non-combat troops remaining in Iraq (though Obama also expressed a similar sentiment on Larry King Live last week).
To me, however, that seems very different to supporting long-term permanent bases being established in Iraq and therefore is a major misrepresentation of her position. As far as I am aware, neither she nor any other major candidate has expressed support for establishing permanent U.S. bases in Iraq.
